Understanding photobiomodulation research

A plain-language guide to reading red and near-infrared light research with appropriate care.

What the literature examines

Photobiomodulation is an umbrella term used in published literature for studies involving particular wavelengths, light sources, doses and protocols. It is not a single treatment or a guarantee of any particular outcome.

Why device details matter

Research findings depend on study design and the exact intervention used. Wavelength, irradiance, energy delivered, treatment schedule, body area and participant population can all differ. Results from one protocol should not be assumed to apply to another device or to every person.

Questions worth asking
